1st Place – 2008 Wolf River Rondezvous Comp 30-34
Posted by joel on September 29, 2008
Logan, Beth, Ben Koenig and I drove over to Shawano to Area 47 for the Wolf River Rondezvous. This race really felt like the first race of fall as the temperatures were in the low to mid 60′s. I hadn’t been doing a whole lot of training as I’ve had a new client in Mosinee I’d been working w/ most of the week. I felt pretty good going into the race and got “called up to the line” for the 2nd time this year which was pretty cool!
This year is the first time for this particular WORS event and one could tell by the newly cut single track. One of the key points of interest on the course is a culvert that we had to ride through. It is about 6 feet high and 3 three feet wide! Being clausterphobic would be a big disadvantage.
This happened to be the first time Logan did the child race. He ended up finishing 4th overall and got a medal.
I ended up riding with Douglas Pietz (on a single speed) from FDLCyclery for a good part of the race, similar to Rhinelander. I ended up placing 2nd overall behind Joe Curtes who beat me by over a minute.
Here are the overall [results].

Friend and Fellow Cyclist Passes Away
Posted by joel on September 21, 2008
We’ve lost a great cycling advocate and competitor in Gregg Bednorski this weekend. According to the local paper and certain witnesses, Gregg was on a training ride and inadvertently hit a parked car. Tragically, he died Friday evening. Gregg is survived by his wife Tammy and two children (Isabelle 5 and Adam 1).
Though I didn’t know him well, he was one of the best cyclists I’ve known and riden in my cycling career. I can honestly say that I aspired to ride like him. After hearing about Gregg and riding with him on numerous Wednesday night Wheeler rides, I was humbled. And after talking with him and meeting his wife I determined he wasn’t only a good cyclist but role model in all aspects of life.
Gregg, you will be remembered and your family will be in our prayers. Here is Gregg’s [obituary]

Now that Lance is training and doing mountain bike races as a pre-cursor to his upcoming return to the tour, I thought it would be appropriate to post this link pertaining to Lance and mountain biking. Thanks to Chad for the link!

1st Place – 2008 Smokin Spoke Comp 30-34
Posted by joel on September 8, 2008
On the heels of Monica and Jeff’s wedding, Sunday I headed up to Rhinelander for the Smokin Spoke. Coming in I was feeling a little soft after the festivities on Saturday. The drive up I was feeling sleepy, my stomach was churning, and I had a little headache. To top it off I arrived about 45 minutes before start time which didn’t give me much time to prep.
The start group was smaller than normal given this race is the furthest north. The lead out was rather slow and no one really wanted to take charge. After about a mile of sitting on a wheel we came to a hill and I was thinking this pace is too slow so I stepped it up and pulled out front. I continued to pull away and maintained about a 45 second gap through about 8 miles. At that time, a single speeder from Milwaukee caught up and we rode together for about a mile. All was going well until I dropped my chain on a bumpy downhill section (first time this year with the Rohloff mind you). I was half expecting to loose a couple spots, but that didn’t happen! I got the chain back on and over about 2 miles made up the gap Doug Pietz put on me. After completing the first lap he and I rode the remaining lap 1 and 2 changing positions on occasion. Knowing he was on a single speed and that the last mile or so was pretty open I had the advantage of a bigger gear and took advantage. I pulled ahead with two miles to go and maintained it for a Comp overall win – my first!!
Post race was pretty interesting because about a minute after I came in the wind picked up and a hail storm kicked in. The race coordinators pulled the elite racers off one lap short of completion.

Seth and Logan cheering on the Crew
Posted by joel on September 3, 2008
This is somewhat of a belated post but here is Seth and Logan from the Brewer game. The picture was taken on July 26th, 08. Coincidently, it was pretty close to Luke’s B-day too.
