Dealing with fragmentation on Server 2003

Posted by joel on January 14, 2010

With the advent of Windows Server 2008 and Server 2008R2 the troubling fragmentation issue has gone away for the most part. In the past with Server 2003, I’ve dealt with the fragmentation by scheduling a task to run on off-hours that handles the defrag process. After being given the task of updating servers I’ve run across some systems that are somewhat outdated/unpatched, not defragged, etc. Here is a screen shot of a recent system I started working with.

Some amount of fragmentation!

Dealing with duplicate MAC addresses and Hyper-V

Posted by joel on December 2, 2009

After building up four Hyper-V servers running Server 2008 R2, I ran into a head pounder yesterday. After taking a sysprep’d image of Server2008 and getting it all setup I would get inconsistent network connectivity. I rebuilt the network stack, blew away the virtual card, confirmed it wasn’t the Hyper-V server itself, yada yada yada. I ended up finding this [post] about duplicate MAC addresses over at virtualizationadmin.com. After reviewing the document, I went through and inspected all the MAC addresses across four Hyper-V servers and found the duplicate!

My solution was also near the bottom of the document whereby I assigned a static MAC address from within SCVMM. Worked like a charm.

“ASN1 bad tag value met” error when processing a certificate request in IIS 7

Posted by joel on November 23, 2009

After working through both of the solutions found on [WebTopics] pertaining to a resolution to the “ASN1 bad tag value met” issue, I found that with a GoDaddy Standard Certificate there are two separate issuing organization. After spending two hours of futzing with it, I determined I had to switch the issuer from GoDaddy to Starfield Secure Certificate during the cert “re-load” process. Once I did that I was able to install the certificate and move onto bigger and better things – like setting up an NLB web server!

Re-load certificate on godaddy.com

Updated Site

Posted by joel on August 13, 2009

In an ongoing effort to keep my family and friends current on what goes on within the Hynes family house hold, I thought it would be a great idea to update http://www.joelhynes.com with a more current interface. Most of the old posts are now in an archive stored away on a server at 424 and I will work on getting those published. For now, have a look at the updated version of the site.

As it pertains to the family, a few events have, are, and will take place:

  1. Gramma Bernies Bday – Aug 13, 2009
  2. Gavin’s 3rd Bday – Aug 14, 2009
  3. Logans return to Wausau – Aug 13, 2009
  4. Race the Lake (road race in Fon du Lac) Aug 16, 2009
  5. Most importantly, we are expecting our fourth child!
